How to Extract Subtitles from MKV File

Matroska Multimedia Container, commonly known as MKV is a file format that binds multiple media files such as audio, video, subtitles, and other metadata in one file. Matroska has been a revolutionary fork that provides high-quality media with relatively smaller sizes compared to other formats.

In this tutorial, we will discuss various methods you can use to extract a subtitle file from a Matroska container file.

Method 1 - Extract Subtitles from MKV Using MKVToolnix

MKVToolNix is a free and open-source tool that provides a suite of tools for creating, altering, inspecting and dissecting Matroska files in Linux, Windows, and other Unix-Like systems.

To extract subtitles using MKVToolNix, downlaod the gMKVExtractGUI from the link below:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/gmkvextractgui/

Once downloaded, launch the tool and choose your target MKV file from the Browse Button.

Select the subtitle file you wish to extract from the file and click Extract.
